Charity Scams and Identity Theft
By admin • Feb 25th, 2009 • Category: Identity Theft, Identity Theft Protection
Most people are kind and naturally want to be giving. Additionally, there are many different worthy charitable organizations that truly do deserve our support. Unfortunately, there is an underbelly in the world today in which lurk horrible scammers who take advantage of these two facts. These individuals are involved in identity theft. And these people use charities as tools to commit the crime of identity theft.
There are a number of different ways in which people involved in identity theft use charity scams in order to snatch the personal and financial information from their victims. For example, a frequent scheme used by these criminals is to call unsuspecting targets on the phone. Through these calls, these individuals intent on committing identity theft pose as being affiliated and associated with a worthy charity.
These individuals are very effective at making an appealing pitch. Moreover, they may not actually ask you to donate much money at all. But, in the end, they are not trying to get money from you as a result of the phone call itself. They want to glean your personal and financial information in order to commit identity theft – which can prove to be far more
profitable to these individuals over the long term. A good credit protection program is always critical for individuals and businesses alike.
Another tactic that is employed by these individuals is to actually go door to door under the guise of soliciting for a worthy charity. Yet again, their immediate goal is not necessarily to snatch money from you at this time – although they happily will walk away with even a small amount. Their ultimate goal is to get your personal and financial information in order to commit identity theft.
There are some steps that you can and must take when it comes to protecting yourself against this type of identity theft scheme. First of all, while there are legitimate charities soliciting people in this manner, you need to keep a very important fact in mind. If it is a legitimate charitable solicitation, the person making the appeal over the phone or in person will be more than willing to provide you contact information and will be more than willing to allow you the time you need to research the charity and the solicitation. A legitimate charity and a legitimate solicitor will have nothing to hide.
Finally, local agencies like the Better Business Bureau and similar organizations will be able to give you basic information about organizations that legitimately are raising money in your community.
