Credit Card Fraud and 5 Easy Ways to Protect Yourself

By admin • Nov 19th, 2007 • Category: Credit Card Theft and Fraud, Identity Theft, Identity Theft Protection

In the recent years, the credit card has become the most common means to pay for our purchases, from grocery shopping to online transactions. With our increasing usage of credit cards and the increasing number of ways a credit card can be used, it is not surprising that credit card fraud has also become more prevalent.

There are a number of ways that thieves can get access to your credit card. They can go through your trash or steal your mail in order to get your personal information. They can also stand very close to you while at the ATM or when you make a purchase, so they can take a good look at your PIN number. They can also send you an email or call you, posing as a representative from a financial institution, requesting for your personal information.

With this information, the thief can obtain new credit cards, apply for loans in your name and even wipe out your checking and savings account. That’s why it’s important to take the following steps to protect yourself from credit card fraud:

First, be more cautious when it comes to handling your credit card. Make sure that you keep your credit card with you at all times. Keep an eye on your card during transactions and get it back as soon as possible. There have been some cases wherein waiters get your credit card numbers and then sell it so the fraud won’t be traced back to them. Moreover when at an ATM, make sure that no one is standing near you.

Second, never give out valuable personal information over the phone or internet unless you are absolutely sure that it is a secure transaction. It’s helpful to look for the “https” and secure logo on the site that says you are entering a secure access web page.

Third, monitor your credit card bills and check your credit reports regularly. Doing so will make it easier for you to take care of any potential problems and watch for fraudulent activity. You should also report any questionable charges immediately to the card issuer.

Fourth, make sure you shred any valuable documents before throwing them away. Moreover, it’s also helpful to store and organize all receipts and important personal documents so you can get back to them easily when you want to check for fraudulent activity.

Fifth, arming yourself with knowledge is an important defense against credit card fraud. It is definitely wise to be aware of the latest credit card fraud schemes so you can avoid becoming a victim. Moreover, take advantage of certain technological advances with your credit card like identification photos, fingerprinting, and chip/PIN systems.

Becoming a victim to credit card fraud is truly a nightmare. That’s why following the simple steps above is indeed worth the while as it could potentially save you thousands of dollars and a lot of headache in the future.
