Identity Theft Guidelines When Doing Business Online
By admin • Sep 21st, 2007 • Category: Credit Card Theft and Fraud, Identity Theft, Internet Scams, LifeLock, PhishingIt isn’t unusual these days to hear about someone losing large amounts of money through buying and selling on the internet. It is a real concern, but there are ways to avoid becoming a victim. Here are some tips on how to safely buy and sell on the internet and still enjoy doing business from the comfort of your own home.
Buying Tips
If you are purchasing an item on an internet auction site, remember these basics:
1. Be sure to read the rules and regulations governing your obligations as a buyer prior to bidding.
2. The Better Business Bureau is a great resource for investigating a seller, especially if the seller is listed as a business.
3. Take a look at their feedback. This will speak loud and clear about their business practices.
4. Ask the seller how they will insure the delivery of your item.
5. If the seller provides a telephone number, give them a call to ensure it is a valid number.
6. A physical address, not a post office box, is best obtained from the seller. Post office boxes should be avoided when sending payment in the form of a check or money order.
7. Under no circumstances does a seller need to obtain your Social Security Number, Bank Account Numbers or your Driver’s License Number. Do not give these out for any reason!
8. Consider all of your options when making a decision on how to pay for your item. A post office box address is not considered a valid address and could be questioned as a valid transaction.
9. Request written confirmation regarding shipping costs and delivery time in order to avoid any misunderstandings.
Selling Tips
If you are going to sell merchandise on an internet auction site, keep the following things in mind:
- Know your obligations as a seller before setting up an account.
- Utilize only secure web sites that ensure secure credit card transactions.
- If you are a business, put the customer at ease by providing your address, e-mail address and a phone number where you can be reached.
- Outline the guidelines by which you plan to insure the timely delivery of the item in question.
- Give detailed and honest descriptions of your merchandise, along with a picture of the actual item up for bid.
- Just as with any business, take good care of your customers! Then, request feedback to build your integrity as a business owner and seller on the internet.
Taking these simple steps can help you avoid identity theft and fraud. Safe business practice is a must when doing business online. Be Safe!

Under Selling Tips, it is suggested for seller to specify under which conditions there will be partial money back. See what happened to me I put an item for sell under ebay. It was a online downloadable software program & I offered 7 days moneyback.
One program sold but after 5 days buyer asked for moneyback. He refused to settle with program cost less ebay listing charge & threaten for negative feedback. which forced me to pay ebay listing charge as well. So you can see finally buyer ot the program for free misusing the moneyback offer & I even have lost the listing charge in addition to giving away program for free. so I now onward put a condition “7 days moneyback, full amount less the ebay listing charge:!
Thanks for these useful tips to buy/sell online.
This seller tip is important for buyer too:
“Utilize only secure web sites that ensure secure credit card transactions.”
For buyer it can be
“Use only secure web sites before entering credit card details. look for https”
