What is Identity Theft?
By admin • Jul 24th, 2007 • Category: Identity TheftIdentity theft is obtaining another person’s personal information for your own personal gain. It is more than just stealing someone’s social security number. It includes mail fraud and credit card fraud. With the right information, an identity thief can completely take over a person’s financial life and have it ruins in no time. The amount of time and money that it takes to restore this life back to normal is astronomical. This article will give you an overview of identity theft and what you can do to prevent it.
Identity theft in America is on the rise. This is due to advancing technology and people taking advantage of the ease of online shopping and using debit and credit cards in the stores. Identity thieves are developing new ways every day to obtain your personal information. Don’t assume that just because someone is a thief that means that he is stupid. Most identity thieves are highly intelligent and can gain access to your information without you being aware. It may be months before you realize that someone has stolen your identity. By this time, your financial life is ruined along with your credit.
Identity thieves like to prey on the helpless and uninformed. Elderly people are prime targets for identity theft. They are less likely to stay informed and may be more trusting than other people. Children can become victims of identity theft also. Thieves can steal your child’s social security number and build a whole new identity around it. Your child’s credit may be ruined before he even gets out of grade school.
Be very careful with your credit card or debit card if you use in the store. Identity thieves have been known to use tiny cameras to take pictures of your card as you swipe. They can use these pictures to obtain the number from your card and start wiping you out. Don’t ever put your social security number on your checks or your driver’s license. Using good old fashioned cash when you go to the store or to a restaurant is a good way to protect your identity. Sure you run a risk of your cash getting stolen, but which is worse, the cash in hand being stolen or all of your future earnings and credit being stolen?
It is important that you keep a close eye on your credit card statements and your credit reports. If you notice anything fishy, contact your credit card company at once. Contact the three major credit reporting agencies and have a fraud alert placed on your files. This will not allow any more pre-approved credit offers in your name for the next two years. It will also not allow any line of credit to be approved without your consent.
Identity thieves can be very sneaky. Keep informed on all the ways that a thief can get his hands on your personal information. Remember, in the war against identity theft, knowledge is power. Be safe!
