Your Wallet and Identity Theft

By admin • Feb 16th, 2009 • Category: Identity Theft, Identity Theft Protection

Identity theft is a major crime in the 21st century.  Over the course of the past ten years, identity theft has been one of the most frequent and serious of crimes that are being committed in many countries the world over.  Because of this reality, it is very important that people like you take all steps necessary in order to protect yourself against identity theft.

Like many people, you may carry a wallet with you.  If you are a man, you may carry a wallet in your pocket.  If you are a woman, you may include a wallet with the other items you carry in your purse.  In any case, odds are that you do not leave home without a wallet.

If you are also like many people, you include a great deal of information in your wallet.  Of course, there is an element of convenience to including these items in your wallet when you are out and about.  However, the reality is that if you really want to protect yourself against identity theft, you need to include fewer rather than more things in your wallet.

The fact is that if your wallet is lost or stolen, a person intent on committing identity theft can utilize some of the items that you very well may have in your wallet in order to effect this serious crime.  Therefore, and again, you need to take care about what you actually are carrying around with you in your wallet.

There are some items that you absolutely should keep out of your wallet:

  •  Do not carry your Social Security card with you in your wallet.  The only time you really need to have a Social Security card on hand is when you are starting a new job.
  • Keep only one credit card in your wallet.  While you might have more than one credit card, include only one card in your wallet at a time.
  • Do not include in your wallet anything that lists your passwords for different accounts that you might have.  You particularly must never include the password for your ATM card with you in your wallet.

By paying attention to these simple and easy to follow suggestions, you will have taken what really is a significant step towards protecting yourself against identity theft.  You will be putting up a wall that will protect you against people who desire to commit identity theft and who desire to attempt to use you as a target.
